While investigating a separate matter, on October 20th, the Yellowknife RCMP entered a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act investigation, and seized suspected crack cocaine, powder cocaine and cash.
On October 20, Yellowknife RCMP officers attended a residence on Gitzel Street to locate a man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant.
When inside the residence, officers did not locate the wanted man but observed what appeared to be drug trafficking activity. All four occupants of the residence were arrested.
A search warrant was requested and obtained for the residence.
During the execution of the search warrant, RCMP located and seized over 72 grams of suspected crack cocaine, 79.9 grams of suspected powder cocaine and approximately $2,500 in Canadian currency.
As a result, Edmund Kasook, 23-year-old, and a 17-year-old youth, both from Edmonton, were charged with Possession for the purpose of trafficking – Schedule I Cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
Edmund Kasook was also charged with two counts of Failure to comply with conditions, contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code.
Kasook was remanded into custody and will appear in court on October 23, 2026. The 17-year-old youth was released with a court appearance scheduled for November 2, 2026.
A third person, Zander Sydney-Firth, from Inuvik, was on an outstanding arrest warrant for assault with a weapon, and failure to comply with a release order and a probation order. He was remanded into custody and will appear in court on October 23, 2026.
The fourth person has been released without charges.
