Nunavut RCMP Major Crime Unit charge Iqaluit man with Second Degree Murder

On October 16, 2026, the Nunavut RCMP Major Crime Unit (MCU) arrested an Iqaluit man in connection to the death of Robert Kipanik (age 38). 

Police have charged Qaqasie Aningmiuq (age 21) with: 

• Second Degree Murder, Section 235(1) C.C

Aningmiuq was remanded into custody, and his next court appearance is scheduled for November 17, 2026, in Iqaluit, Nunavut. 

Background: 

On October 6, 2026, the Iqaluit RCMP responded to an altercation in the 300 block of the city. Two individuals were transported to the Qikiqtani General Hospital with life threatening injuries. Despite life saving measures, Robert Kipanik succumbed to his injuries. The second individual was medivaced to Ottawa, Ontario and was reported to be in stable condition. 

As the matter is before the courts, no further information will be released.
