Shelburne District RCMP has charged a man with arson and multiple firearms offences after an incident in Shag Harbour.

On October 31, at approximately 1 p.m., officers responded to a firearms complaint at a home on Homestead Ln. While enroute, officers learned a man had discharged a firearm, striking his unoccupied vehicle which was parked outside the home.

Upon arrival, officers noted a fire inside the residence, located the vehicle, and determined that no one was at the home. Fire services were then dispatched to extinguish the fire.

Through the investigation, officers learned that following an argument with a woman known to him, the man had fired a shot at his vehicle and threatened to burn the home. The woman was able to leave the home safely and was not physically injured.

At approximately 3:10 p.m., Wade Douglas Penney, 47, of Shag Harbour, was safely arrested on Homestead Ln.

On November 1, officers executed a search warrant at the residence and seized 11 firearms including several handguns and a large sum of ammunition.

Penney has been charged with:

  • Arson
  • Discharging Firearm with Intent
  • Discharging Firearm – Recklessness
  • Careless Use of Firearm (two counts)
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Mischief

He appeared in Yarmouth Provincial Court on November 2 and was remanded into custody pending another appearance on November 10.
