Colchester County District RCMP is investigating the theft of a heritage plaque and seeking information from the public.

On October 2, officers responded to a report of a theft from a historic monument in a rural area near Harry Elliott Rd., Lower Onslow. Investigators learned that a brass plaque had been stolen from a monument on or around September 17.

The plaque is approximately 76 years old. It was originally created by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada to commemorate the Ingonish-French River Portage route and the monument is maintained by Parks Canada. It is approximately 32 inches tall and 19 inches across, and weighs around 70 pounds.

There is damage to the stone monument from the removal of the plaque.

Anyone with information about the theft, the whereabouts of the plaque, or other information that will support the investigation is asked to contact Colchester County District RCMP at 902-893-6820. To remain anonymous, call Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers, toll-free, at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), submit a secure web tip at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca, or use the P3 Tips app.
