After RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador reminded parents and guardians to inspect children’s Halloween candy over the weekend, police in Stephenville received a report that small metal objects were found inside two pieces of bubble gum collected while trick-or-treating.

On Monday, November 2, Bay St. George RCMP received a call from a parent-guardian who reported finding two pieces of Double Bubble Halloween gum containing small metal items. Police have not yet confirmed the source of the candy, however the family was able to provide some details regarding the route and confirmed that they went door-to-door in several neighbourhoods including Area 13, Florida Loop, and the Spruce Drive area in Kippens.

An image of a piece of the gum is attached.

Police are investigating the source of the treats in the Stephenville area, and ask anyone who makes a similar discovery to contact the detachment at 709-643-2118 or 1-800-709-RCMP (7267).

RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador continues to remind parents and trusted adults to carefully inspect all Hallowe’en candy collected throughout the weekend. You are also encouraged to check any leftover treats you purchased to hand out at your home. Look for signs of tampering, but also for manufacturing defects. Make sure the packaging is intact and that the treats are a recognizable trusted commercial brand.

If you have concerns that a treat has been tampered with, set it aside and contact your local police detachment immediately.
