Avalon East District RCMP arrested two men on Tuesday after responding to a report of an attempted theft of an off-road vehicle in Cape Broyle. Brad O’Toole and Brett Lepore were held in custody overnight to appear in court today.
On October 20 around 7:15 a.m., officers from the Holyrood and Ferryland RCMP detachments responded to a property on Horsechops Road after the owner reported that their surveillance cameras detected an unknown person attempting to start their all-terrain vehicle.
Witnesses provided a description of a suspicious vehicle seen in the area, and the police investigation identified two suspects who were located nearby a short time later. The pair were taken into custody without incident.
One suspect, later identified as 43-year-old Brett Lepore of St. John’s, provided a false name to police at the time of his arrest. Officers also discovered that Lepore was in violation of court-imposed conditions of his release from custody in an unrelated matter.
Lepore and Brad Dermot O’Toole, 46, were held in custody overnight and charged with theft of a motor vehicle. Lepore faces additional charges of obstruction and failure to comply with a release order (two counts).
Each man is expected to appear in provincial court on October 21.
The investigation is ongoing, with additional charges possible.
Anyone with information about this incident, including surveillance or dash camera footage, and anyone who recently witnessed suspicious activity in the Horsechops Road area of Cape Broyle is asked to contact the RCMP at 709-229-3892.
