Major Crime Unit investigating death of 57-year-old man as suspicious

Update, August 19, 2026: The New Brunswick RCMP’s Major Crime Unit is releasing the name of the victim, Michael Eric Claude Steeves, and his death is now being investigated as a homicide. 

Police are now looking to speak with a male driver who stopped and spoke with an individual walking on Route 910 in the Shenstone and Hillsborough areas, as well as a woman who may have provided transportation to an individual, either on Route 910 between Shenstone and Hillsborough or on Main Street in Hillsborough, during the evening of August 2, 2026, into the early morning hours of August 3, 2026.

The New Brunswick RCMP Major Crime Unit (MCU) is investigating the death of a 57-year-old man in Shenstone, N.B., as suspicious.

On August 4, 2026, at approximately 7:30 p.m., members of the Caledonia Region RCMP detachment responded to a report of a sudden death at a residence on Route 910 in Shenstone. When police arrived, they located the body of a 57-year-old man inside of the residence.

The Major Crime Unit has since assumed carriage of the file and is investigating the man’s death as suspicious.

The investigation is ongoing.
