The Manitoba RCMP has received several reports in recent days involving individuals calling from what appears to be phone numbers associated to the RCMP, with the person on the line informing them of suspicious or fraudulent activity performed in their names.

This is a ruse concocted by scammers in order to convince you to click a link, verify your passwords and/or hand over your bank account details.

In fact, nobody from the RCMP is calling them and the phone number – which appears to be coming from a detachment – has been faked. Other detachments elsewhere in Canada have reported similar scams.

Anyone receiving a call like this should not give out any personal information and hang up immediately.

As a general reminder, fraudsters will impersonate anybody to take advantage of Canadians – including the RCMP. They may:

  • Send false delivery notices for court documents;
  • Accuse you of serious crimes; and/or
  • Demand payment to bail a loved one out of jail.

Such threats are designed to create a false sense of urgency and pressure you into sharing personal information.

Don’t let fear rush you into acting. The best advice is to hang-up immediately and call back the detachment by looking up the number at:
