Criminal activity or behaviour that could impact your RCMP application

As a police officer, you are expected to uphold the law. Any criminal activity or behaviour during the application process could disqualify you from the process.

During the application process, you:

  • must not participate in any criminal behaviour or activity in Canada or abroad, regardless of whether you are arrested or charged
  • must not cheat on any portion of the RCMP application process

Examples of criminal behaviours and activities

Serious criminal offences include, but are not limited to:

  • murder and manslaughter
  • sexual or physical assault
  • production or distribution of child pornography
  • sexual exploitation, violence, abuse or neglect towards children, vulnerable adults, or both
  • terrorist activities
  • participation with any organized criminal group
  • benefiting from the trafficking, importing, unlawful manufacturing or unlawful cultivating of illegal drugs
  • arson resulting in loss of life or substantial damage
  • forcible confinement
  • robbery
  • any crime committed with a facial covering, a weapon, or both
  • illicit drug use (including non-medical prescription or steroid use)
  • purchasing sexual services
  • solicitation for the purpose of prostitution of another person
  • impaired driving

Evaluating your past actions

For past actions, some of the things we consider to determine suitability include:

  • the severity of the offence or behaviour
  • the prevalence or frequency of the activity or behaviour
  • the circumstances or context around the activity or behaviour
  • the intent behind the activity or behaviour
  • whether the activity or behaviour led to any regret
  • how long ago the offence or behaviour occurred
  • your age at the time of the offence or behaviour
  • your conduct since the last incident

No matter how well qualified, if you can't be trusted to carry out your tasks honestly and reliably, you will not be successful in the selection process.
