August road report: Speeding and distracted driving remain top concerns on Richmond roads

Richmond RCMP officers continued proactive traffic enforcement throughout August, issuing more than 1,297 Motor Vehicle Act violation tickets and charges as part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety and address community concerns.

Throughout the month, officers conducted targeted enforcement focused on speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, HOV lane compliance, and locations identified through public complaints.

August traffic violations at a glance

• Speeding: 335
• Driver's licence infractions: 190
• Distracted driving: 194
• Impaired driving (drug/alcohol): 34
• E-scooter violations: 2

Targeted enforcement initiatives included operations aimed at distracted driving, including cell phone use, HOV lane compliance, and addressing concerns regarding illegal passenger drop-offs in the area of No. 3 Road and Westminster Highway. Officers also conducted focused speed enforcement along Steveston Highway, where 48 speed-related violations were observed.

Several significant violations were recorded during the month:

• A driver was stopped on Highway 91 near the Knight Street Bridge for travelling 47 km/h over the posted speed limit. The vehicle was impounded for seven days. 
• Another driver was stopped on Westminster Highway after being recorded travelling 103 km/h in a posted 50 km/h zone, resulting in an excessive speed violation and a seven-day vehicle impound.  
• Officers took enforcement action against a motorcyclist for stunting after observing the rider lift the front wheel from the roadway while accelerating through a turn. The motorcycle was impounded for seven days. 

In addition to enforcement, Richmond RCMP participated in a three-part e-scooter and e-bike safety outreach campaign throughout August. The initiative focused on educating riders about applicable regulations and safe operating practices to help improve safety for all road users. The next outreach event is scheduled for September 9, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Railway Greenway and Granville Avenue. 

"Traffic safety remains a priority for Richmond RCMP," says Sgt. Stephen Large, Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit. "Through targeted enforcement and public education, we continue to address risky driving behaviours and respond to concerns raised by our community. Motorists, cyclists, and e-scooter users all play a role in keeping Richmond's roads safe."
