Community Policing Unit expanding its Home & Business Security Evaluations program

The Prince George RCMP’s Community Policing Unit is expanding its home and business security evaluations program and is eager to begin sharing this unique opportunity with residents and business owners in the Prince George area. It is a free program that focuses on identifying areas in buildings or homes that may inadvertently be creating an opportunity for nuisance and criminal behaviour by spaces that are not effectively designed. 

“We use, in part, crime prevention through environmental design principles, which emphasize that well-designed, actively used spaces can help reduce crime and contribute to safer, more vibrant communities,” states Sonja Towle, Community Policing Coordinator for Prince George RCMP.

The key concepts of these evaluations are:

• Natural Access Control - Guiding pedestrian access to and from spaces by utilizing real and perceived barriers.
• Natural Surveillance - Placement of physical features, land uses, activities and people in such a way as to maximize visibility.
• Territoriality - Physical design can contribute to a sense of territory.
• Maintenance - Providing efficient maintenance of space to ensure natural surveillance; natural access control and territoriality are maximized.
