Strategic Plan
In the fall of 2023, Inspector Ted Lewko, Officer in Charge of the Mission RCMP detachment, unveiled the detachment’s new strategic plan. This plan, for the period of 2023-2027, outlines our vision and goal to make Mission the safest and most liveable community possible. It outlines a series of goals and objectives for the next five years, including a focus on community safety, community connections, and organizational resilience, as well as a strategy on how to achieve those goals.
Crime Prevention Office (CPO)
The Crime Prevention Office (CPO) is an initiative of the City of Mission and the Mission RCMP, designed to bring the police and citizens of Mission into closer contact. It provides information on crime and safety-related services and programs to the public, including problem-solving (where no police are required) and educational resources for schools and preschools. Additionally, the CPO hosts youth and university practicum programs and serves as the base of operations for Block Watch, Speed Watch, and Citizens on Patrol.
Community Safety and Enforcement Team (CSET)
The Mission RCMP Community Safety and Enforcement Team (CSET) supports the strategic priority of “Safe Homes, Safe Communities” through a range of proactive, community‑focused initiatives that complement crime reduction efforts. The team includes specialized members who work with schools, health professionals, Indigenous communities, residents, and local businesses to promote safety, provide crisis support, address neighbourhood concerns, and strengthen community relationships. Through this integrated approach, CSET remains committed to reducing crime and enhancing quality of life in the City of Mission.
General Duty (GD)
The front-line emergency response police service operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and involves all aspects of preventative and investigative police work. General Duty officers are the first responders to all calls for service within the community and work on a four-watch system with a total of 30 members.
Serious Crime Unit (SCU)
The Mission RCMP Serious Crime Unit investigates complex cases that demand specialized skills and sustained investigative effort. These long-term files often involve attempted murder, armed robberies targeting financial institutions, and violent assaults resulting in bodily harm. The unit also handles home invasions, sexual assaults, missing persons investigations where foul play is suspected, and major financial crimes that extend beyond regional boundaries.
Crime Reduction Unit (CRU)
The Mission RCMP Crime Reduction Unit focuses on identifying, targeting, investigating, and dismantling street‑level crime, illicit drug production and trafficking, and organized crime activities that operate within, or negatively affect, the City of Mission. This includes disrupting networks involved in the production substances such as fentanyl and methamphetamine, as well as other criminal operations that pose a risk to community safety.
Traffic
Mission RCMP’s Traffic Services Unit helps keep the community safe through various traffic safety measures and targeted enforcement campaigns. The unit also responds to serious collisions and investigates driving offences where criminal charges are possible—such as drug- or liquor-impaired driving.
Victim Services
Mission Victim Services provides 24/7 on-scene crisis intervention, as well as telephone and in-person follow-up. Victim Services offers drop-in and appointment access at the detachment and accompanies victims to court and other key appointments. In accordance with the BC Victims of Crime Act, we help victims and their families cope with the effects of crime and trauma.
Records Department
The Mission RCMP Detachment Records Department manages police files and information systems that support both frontline policing and public service. The department ensures the accuracy and integrity of police records through quality assurance, transcription services, and Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) entries and queries, while also providing services to the public such as processing Access to Information and Privacy (ATIP) and disclosure requests, and issuing copies of motor vehicle accident reports.
Specialized Integrated Services
Police Dog Services
The Mission RCMP is supported by Police Dog Services, which provide specialized assistance to frontline officers during investigations that require searches for persons, property, or contraband. Police Service Dogs are also deployed in search‑and‑rescue operations to help locate lost or missing individuals.
Although based in Chilliwack, the Police Dog Service officer works as part of a regional team of specialists that proudly serve Mission and communities throughout the Upper Fraser Valley.
Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT)
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is responsible for investigating homicides, police‑involved shootings, and in‑custody deaths across the RCMP’s Lower Mainland District. The team also provides these investigative services for four independent municipal police departments—Abbotsford, New Westminster, Port Moody, and West Vancouver.
IHIT operates as a fully integrated unit, functioning as the primary homicide investigation team for each partner agency. This collaborative approach ensures consistent, professional, and thorough investigations across jurisdictions throughout the region.
Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS)
The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) provides specialized forensic analysis of serious motor vehicle collisions that result in serious injury or death across British Columbia. ICARS supports Mission RCMP investigators by reconstructing complex collision scenes to help determine how and why a collision occurred.
The Lower Mainland ICARS unit is based at RCMP headquarters in Surrey and responds to incidents from Pemberton to Boston Bar. Team members are highly trained and use advanced technology—including drone photography, surveying tools, and 3D laser scanning—to document scenes, analyze collision factors, and produce accurate scale diagrams. ICARS investigators also provide expert court testimony in support of major investigations.
Integrated Emergency Response Team (IERT)
The Integrated Emergency Response Team (IERT) provides specialized support during high‑risk incidents that exceed the capabilities of local police resources. Mission RCMP members may request IERT assistance during situations involving armed or barricaded individuals, high‑risk arrests, or other incidents where an elevated threat to public or officer safety exists.
Operating 24/7, the Lower Mainland IERT is based out of RCMP headquarters in Surrey and serves 29 RCMP communities, including Mission, as well as several municipal police departments. Team members are highly trained specialists equipped to respond in all types of terrain, environments, and weather conditions across a large geographic area spanning from Pemberton to Boston Bar and south to the U.S. border.
Integrated Road Safety Unit (IRSU)
The Integrated Road Safety Unit (IRSU) is a multi‑agency traffic enforcement team dedicated to reducing serious injuries and fatalities on British Columbia roadways. Formed in 2004, IRSU consists of more than 130 traffic enforcement officers from the RCMP and municipal police agencies across the province.
Mission RCMP works closely with IRSU to enhance road safety through targeted enforcement in high‑collision areas within the community and surrounding region. IRSU focuses on high‑risk driving behaviours that contribute to serious collisions, including speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and seatbelt non‑compliance. The unit also supports criminal interdiction and commercial vehicle enforcement initiatives.
