Sudden death investigation at Degnen Bay

Gabriola Island RCMP are investigating a sudden death that occurred at Degnen Bay.

On May 20, 2026, at approximately 5:00 p.m., BC Emergency Health Services received a 911 call reporting an unresponsive scuba diver in the water. BC Emergency Health Services, Gabriola Fire Department, and local physicians responded and continued life-saving efforts initiated by bystanders, who had located a 66-year-old local man in the water near a mooring buoy.

Despite these efforts, the man was pronounced deceased at the scene, and police were notified.

The police investigation has determined the death is not considered suspicious. The investigation indicates the man entered the water alone from the Degnen Bay dock wearing full scuba equipment and swam a short distance, less than 100 feet. Bystanders later observed him motionless on the surface for several minutes before they attended by boat and discovered he was not breathing.

“This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the man’s family and those who were involved in the response,” says Cpl. Brett Urano, RCMP spokesperson. “We would also like to acknowledge the quick actions of bystanders and the coordinated efforts of emergency responders who provided immediate assistance.”

The BC Coroners Service has assumed conduct of the investigation, with support from the Gabriola Island RCMP.
