With Halloween just around the corner, Coquitlam RCMP is reminding residents to plan ahead, stay alert, and enjoy the festivities safely. Officers will be conducting increased patrols throughout our communities and will be highly visible to help ensure a safe and enjoyable evening for everyone.

Additional officers will be deployed across Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Village of Anmore, Village of Belcarra and kʷikʷəƛ̓əm First Nation on Halloween. Officers will focus on pedestrian safety, proactive patrols, and responding to suspicious activity as neighbourhoods become busier with trick-or-treaters and families.

"Halloween is an exciting tradition that brings families and neighbours together," says Sergeant Adriana O'Malley, Coquitlam RCMP Media Relations Officer. "A little preparation can go a long way in helping everyone enjoy a fun and safe evening. We encourage residents to plan ahead, stay aware of their surroundings, and look out for one another."

Fireworks

Fireworks can pose a significant risk of injury and property damage when used improperly. Residents are reminded that bylaws and regulations governing the sale, possession, and use of fireworks vary between communities.

Before purchasing or using fireworks, ensure you are familiar with the rules and restrictions that apply where you live. Residents are encouraged to review their local municipal regulations:

“We encourage residents to familiarize themselves with local fireworks regulations before Halloween,“ says Sergeant Adriana O’Malley, Coquitlam RCMP Media Relations Officer. “Rules can vary between communities, and taking a few minutes to understand those requirements can help prevent injuries, property damage, and unnecessary calls for service.”

Road Safety Reminder

Halloween is one of the busiest nights of the year for pedestrians. Drivers are reminded to slow down, stay alert, and exercise extra caution in residential neighourhoods, particularly during peak trick-or-treating hours.

Children may cross the street unexpectedly or emerge from between parked vehicles. Motorists should be especially vigilant at intersections, crosswalks, and in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic.

Make a Safety Plan for Children

Parents and caregivers should ensure that older children who are trick-or-treating without an adult walk in groups and stay together. Make sure children have a watch or cell phone and understand their planned route and curfew.

Children of all ages should know:

  • What to do in an emergency
  • How to contact a parent or guardian
  • What to do if they become separated from their group
  • How to cross streets safely and use marked crosswalks whenever possible

Costume Safety

Costumes should be bright, reflective, and easy to see in low-light conditions. Consider adding reflective tape or carrying a flashlight to improve visibility.

Face paint is recommended instead of masks, as masks can obstruct vision and make it more difficult to safely navigate roads and sidewalks.

If your child is wearing a long costume or one with loose fabric, ensure it does not create a tripping hazard.

Check Your Candy

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to inspect all treats before children consume them. While incidents involving tampered treats are rare, checking candy provides an additional level of safety and peace of mind.

Be alert for anything that appears opened, altered, or suspicious. If you believe a child has consumed an unsafe substance, seek medical attention immediately and notify police.

Celebrate Responsibly

We encourage everyone to celebrate responsibly and respectfully. Be considerate of your neighbours, look out for one another, and report suspicious activity when necessary.

Whether you're trick-or-treating, driving through your neighbourhood, or handing out treats, together we can help ensure a safe and enjoyable Halloween for everyone.
