Today marks a significant moment for the RCMP as we close an important chapter in Grande Prairie, with the Grande Prairie Police Service officially assuming responsibility as the community's police of jurisdiction.
As we mark this transition, I want to express my sincere gratitude to the RCMP members, municipal employees and community partners whose dedication and professionalism helped make this milestone possible. While this change brings mixed emotions for many who have served in Grande Prairie and called the city home, it also reflects years of commitment, planning and collaboration.
The RCMP's connection to Grande Prairie reaches back more than 120 years, beginning with regional patrols by the North-West Mounted Police. As policing responsibilities evolved over the decades, the RCMP became the police of jurisdiction in 1943. Since then, the detachment has grown alongside the community, with generations of RCMP employees contributing to public safety and community well-being.
To every RCMP member and municipal employee who has served Grande Prairie over the years: thank you. Your professionalism, resilience and dedication, particularly throughout the transition, have made a lasting difference in the community.
I also want to recognize the law enforcement and community partners who have worked alongside our teams. Your collaboration has been invaluable to public safety, and the trust and support shown by the people of Grande Prairie speak to the strong relationships we have built together.
As the Grande Prairie Police Service assumes responsibility for policing the city, I want to congratulate its members and employees on reaching this significant milestone. This achievement reflects years of dedication and effort by many individuals. We wish the Grande Prairie Police Service continued success as it begins this new chapter serving the community.
To everyone who helped guide this transition, thank you. This achievement reflects the hard work and commitment of many individuals, both past and present. The RCMP is proud of its long history in Grande Prairie and deeply grateful for the privilege of serving this community.
